Naim NAIT 50 - A Tribute!

A modern, classic integrated amplifier for demanding audiophiles.

In the world of high-fidelity audio, the name NAIM Audio has become synonymous with exceptional sound quality and superior engineering. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, NAIM introduced the NAIT 50 amplifier, a limited-edition masterpiece that pays homage to the company's first integrated amplifier while incorporating the latest in audio technology.

A tribute to the original NAIT

NAIM Audio was founded in 1973 by Julian Vereker, with the goal of creating amplifiers that offer pure and analytical sound performance.Since its founding, the company has become synonymous with high-quality craftsmanship and exceptional sound fidelity. The NAIT 50 is part of the NAIT series, which has earned recognition for its reliable performance and ability to combine technology with detail. As part of NAIM's 50th anniversary celebration, the NAIT 50 carries the signature of tradition as well as evolution.

It is a special tribute, one might say, to the iconic NAIT (Naim Audio Integrated Amplifier) released in 1983. While the original NAIT set new performance standards with its minimalist design and impressive sound, the NAIT 50 raises the bar even higher. Retaining the classic aesthetic that made the original NAIT a collector's item, the NAIT 50 blends nostalgia with modern capabilities, making it a must-have for vintage audio enthusiasts and modern audiophiles alike.

Design and build quality

The NAIT 50 stands out with its timeless design—an elegant black chassis adorned with the classic NAIM logo and a simple control layout. Its understated elegance makes it a fitting choice for any listening environment, whether it's a dedicated hi-fi room or a modern living room. Built with high-quality and precise materials, the amplifier promises durability and performance that will last a lifetime.

The Naim NAIT 50, like the rest of the Classic Series, has been updated significantly. First of all it was 25 watts per channel into 8 ohms (and 40 into 4), which makes it more versatile than before. It retains the internal MM phono stage but adds an excellent headphone amplifier. It even has a designated input for “streamer,” which seems intended for the new Naim streamers.

“Internally, the Nait 50 draws on the vast knowledge and experience of Naim’s technical experts; incorporating elements from across our current product ranges. The input selection uses fly-by-wire control to significantly reduce the signal path length and the new headphone amplifier has been lifted from the NSC 222. The all-new exclusive discrete transistor MM phono stage honours the Nait 1 sound signature. The pre-amp uses class A discrete transitory stages and a classic Naim class AB power amplifier comprised of custom, carefully selected audiophile components.”

Unmatched sound quality

NAIM is known for its "musicality"—a quality that brings recordings to life, and the NAIT 50 is no exception. With an output power of 25 watts per channel, it may not seem particularly powerful on paper, but this amplifier is more than capable of driving a wide range of speakers with authority and finesse. The NAIT 50 delivers rich, detailed sound with deep bass, clear mids, and sparkling highs. Whether you're playing vinyl records or streaming digital music, the NAIT 50 guarantees an immersive listening experience.

What we heard...

When you first listen to the Naim NAIT 50, a subtle thrill runs down your spine, and the experience is revelatory in the Athens Pro Audio Demo Room! Playing a variety of musical genres, from intricate classical pieces to jazz and electronic compositions with deep bass, the amplifier's remarkable versatility is immediately apparent.

Our initial listening session featured the Oscar Peterson Trio's Night Train, a classic jazz album. Peterson’s piano sounded both robust and graceful, giving the piece a sense of constant movement. Ray Brown’s bass provided a deep, earthy feel, while Thigpen’s drums maintained a steady rhythm with subtle yet significant interventions. The NAIT 50 allowed this album to shine, demonstrating abundant speed, clarity, and musical energy. Its imaging and soundstage were exceptional.

Next, we moved on to "Waltz for Debby" by the Bill Evans Trio, one of the most iconic works in jazz history. This album exudes tenderness and sensitivity, with Evans playing the piano with a deeply lyrical approach, and our system delivering everything with beautiful interplay.

We concluded our vinyl session with Maria Callas Remastered, a collection featuring some of the most famous arias and opera scenes performed by the legendary soprano throughout her career. The details of her voice were captured with impressive clarity by the NAIT 50, and we have only praise for Naim.

In summary, with classical music, the NAIT 50 excels in rendering the subtle nuances and spatial depth of orchestral compositions, offering a soundstage that feels both expansive and precisely defined. Switching to jazz, rock, or electronic music, the amplifier’s dynamic range and control become evident, easily handling powerful low frequencies and complex rhythms. The NAIT 50’s ability to render both underlying details and powerful crescendos highlights its exceptional performance, providing a rich and immersive listening experience that elevates every piece of music to a new level of clarity.

Modern features, classic charm

While the NAIT 50 pays homage to its vintage roots, it also incorporates modern conveniences to serve today's listeners. It includes several analog inputs, allowing connections to various audio sources such as turntables, CD players, and streaming devices. The addition of a headphone output ensures that personal listening is as enjoyable as listening through speakers.

Limited Edition Legacy

Only 1,973 units of the NAIM NAIT 50 will be produced—a nod to the year of NAIM's founding. This limited edition status makes the NAIT 50 not only a high-performance audio component but also a valuable collector's item. For those who appreciate the heritage and innovation that NAIM represents, owning the NAIT 50 is a way to be part of that legacy.

Conclusion

The NAIM NAIT 50 Integrated Amplifier is more than just a piece of audio equipment; it is a celebration of 50 years of audio excellence. With its blend of classic design, modern features, and unparalleled sound quality, the NAIT 50 is an amplifier that will satisfy both the heart and the ears of any listener. Whether you are a long-time NAIM enthusiast or new to the world of hi-fi, the NAIT 50 is a worthy investment in sound and style.

Our appreciation for the Naim NAIT 50 goes far beyond mere nostalgia for our audiophile roots. There is a cosmic correctness in having this amplifier in your space to remind you of how far you've come and to guide you on where you're going. The truth is that the NAIT 50 is an exceptional piece of history but also a "sonic haven" that can enhance both large and small systems. Like the first Naim NAIT, so is the 50 is an excellent amplifier for small spaces, but it can also perform remarkably well with large speakers, handling them dynamically and bringing to life the vibrations in a room with its powerful low frequencies!
